Connaitre Miller

Connaitre Miller was recently awarded the position as Assistant Professor in jazz voice at Howard University. Preceding her residence at Howard, Ms. Miller spent six years in Adelaide, South Australia, where she built a well-respected jazz voice program at the Elder Conservatorium of Music, University of Adelaide. Immediately following her tenure in Adelaide, Ms. Miller spent one year as the director of vocal jazz at California State University - Long Beach, and at Cypress Community College in Cypress, California.

When not teaching at Howard University, Ms. Miller spends her time conducting jazz singing and jazz choir technique lectures and workshops throughout the U.S. and abroad. She has appeared as a guest lecturer at the 4th World Symposium on Choirs and Choral Music in Sydney, Australia, The Australian National Association of Teachers of Singing Conference in Brisbane, Queensland, and a clinician/adjudicator at the New Zealand Federation of Choirs Annual Festival, just to name a few. Ms. Miller has also served as the clinician and guest artists for several University Jazz Festivals throughout the U.S. as well as conductor of the Washington and Colorado All-State Jazz Choirs.

Prior to her teaching in Australia, Ms. Miller spent three years at the University of Northern Colorado pursuing a Doctor of Arts degree in Choral conducting with a secondary emphasis in Jazz Pedagogy. While at UNC, Ms. Miller sang with the five-member vocal jazz ensemble "The Axidentals" under the direction of Gene Aitken. From 1991-1994 this group shared concerts with internationally acclaimed artists such as Bobby McFerrin, The New York Voices, The Nylons, Gary Burton, Eddie Daniels, Dave Brubeck and Art Garfunkel. Ms. Miller obtained a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance in 1987 from Kansas State University in Manhattan. She is a very versatile musician and teacher having had vast experiences in jazz singing, commercial music, music theatre, public school vocal music instruction at all levels, private teaching of both piano and voice, church choir direction, jazz big band direction, jazz piano and jazz arranging.
